Bolton Wanderers manager Steven Schumacher has praised young defenders Lewis Temple and Sam Inwood for their strong pre-season performances, hinting that loan moves could be on the cards to further their development. The duo featured prominently in recent friendlies, including a full 90-minute outing against Fleetwood Town.
What impressed Schumacher?
Schumacher singled out Temple, who joined in January, for his rapid adaptation to the first-team environment. "He's settled into the group and handled himself really well," the manager said. Inwood, who spent last season on loan at Aldershot Town, also caught the eye with his composure against League Two opposition.
Why loan moves could benefit the pair
With Bolton finishing 5th in League One last season (75 points, 19W-18D-9L, +18 goal difference), competition for places is fierce. Schumacher noted that Temple faces stiff competition from Toaly and Chris Forino at right centre-back. "We don't want to block his pathway," he explained, suggesting a loan could provide valuable experience.
What's next for Inwood?
Inwood, who helped Aldershot secure National League safety last season, is eager for more first-team minutes. "The experience against Everton and Fleetwood was good," he said. The 20-year-old also represented Northern Ireland at U21 level this summer, gaining exposure to different playing styles.
Pre-season progress
Bolton's pre-season has seen them test themselves against higher-level opposition, including Premier League side Everton. Schumacher believes these challenges will stand the young defenders in good stead, whether they stay at the Toughsheet Stadium or go out on loan.
