Stephenson Injury
Luca Stephenson, the 22‑year‑old full‑back signed from Liverpool in the summer, was ruled out for a few weeks after a thigh injury in Bolton’s 2‑1 victory over Preston North End on 7 September. Steven Schumacher told The Bolton News that Stephenson “took a bang on the top of his thigh” during a challenge and had to leave the pitch shortly after. The defender reported a build‑up of tightness, prompting a scan that revealed a blood contusion that had to be drained the following night. Schumacher added that the scan also showed “a bit of damage in there as well, in the thigh”, meaning Stephenson will miss the next few fixtures.
Akin Famewo Concern
The 23‑year‑old centre‑back Akin Famewo, another summer signing, was withdrawn at half‑time in the 0‑0 draw against QPR on 14 September. Schumacher said the injury was the result of a collision, likely with Jack Bonham, that caused a knee swelling. He noted that Famewo was sent off a few minutes into the second half because the contact was “too stiff”, but remains hopeful the injury is not serious.
Transfer Window Strategy
With injuries piling up, Schumacher is looking to strengthen the squad before the final week of the summer transfer window. He explained that the club “has numbers, but we’ve got a lot of inexperience as well” and that players like Toby Ritchie and Charlie Warren are still in the squad but need to be supported. The manager stressed the importance of having a robust squad that can cope with injuries throughout the Championship season. He said the club is “trying our best to remedy that, especially players who are really capable of playing in this division.”
