Bolton Wanderers' under-21s extended their lead at the top of the Professional Development League with a 3-1 derby win at Wigan Athletic. The victory at the Brick Community Stadium gives the young Whites a five-point cushion after eight games.
First-team players John McAtee, Ryan Hardie and David Watson provided the goals. McAtee opened the scoring after 15 minutes, with Hardie and Watson adding to the tally before the break, though Wigan's Gilbertson pulled one back just before half-time.
Ten-man resilience defines performance
Goalkeeper David Harrington was sent off after an hour for a second yellow card, forcing the side to play the final half-hour a man down. Head coach Julian Darby said derbies are often scrappy affairs and praised his team's determination and collective effort to secure the three points. He noted the group dug in when reduced to ten men, with every player contributing to the win.
Darby was also pleased with the contribution from senior players but stressed the importance of the wider academy group. He mentioned that two or three players had trained with the under-18s before joining the match, emphasising that all young players are part of the team's development and must understand what it takes to win.
The result marks Bolton's seventh win in eight league games this season, a stark contrast to the first team's 15th-place standing in the Championship. The senior side has 14 points from 11 games, having recorded four wins and two draws so far. Their recent form of three wins, one draw and one loss from the last five matches, including a goalless draw with Southampton on Saturday 17 October, has them nine points behind the league leaders. They have scored 15 goals and conceded 18 this season, with Sam Dalby the top scorer on four goals. They face a tough test next against third-placed Middlesbrough at home on Friday 23 October. The under-21s' next challenge is a home fixture against Huddersfield Town next Tuesday.
