Bolton Wanderers have signed Japan international midfielder Atsuki Ito from Belgian side KAA Gent. The 28-year-old has agreed a three-year contract, with the deal pending international clearance, visa approval, and EFL ratification, as reported by Bolton Wanderers FC this week.
This move marks manager Steven Schumacher's eleventh signing of a busy summer transfer window. The club's next Championship fixture is away to Sheffield United on September 1st, a match for which midfielder Rúben Rodrigues is currently sidelined. You can view the full upcoming schedule on the club's fixtures page.
Who is Atsuki Ito?
Atsuki Ito is a 6ft 1in central midfielder with over 250 senior appearances. Born in Urawa, Saitama, he began his career with the youth academy of Urawa Red Diamonds but was not initially offered a professional contract. He instead joined Ryutsu Keizai University in 2017, forcing his way into their first team within months. His performances earned him a return to Urawa Red Diamonds, who gave him a full professional deal in February 2021.
He became a key figure for Urawa, making 173 appearances and scoring 19 goals. His peak season came in 2023 when he was named in the J1 League Best XI and won the league's Outstanding Player Award. He also started in the 2023 AFC Champions League final, helping Urawa beat Al Hilal in front of a packed Saitama Stadium to claim their third Asian title. He won the Emperor's Cup in 2021 and the Japanese Super Cup in 2022, and represented the club at the FIFA Club World Cup. Appointed club captain in July 2024, his head coach made the decision "without hesitation."
What is his recent European experience?
Ito moved to KAA Gent in August 2024, making 79 appearances and scoring 7 goals across two seasons in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League. He also gained valuable European experience, playing nine times in the 2024/25 UEFA Conference League. Gent navigated qualifying and the league phase to reach the knockout play-off round, where they were narrowly edged out by Spanish side Real Betis. This continental exposure will be useful for a Bolton side looking to compete in the Championship.
How does he fit into the Bolton squad?
The Japanese midfielder arrives as a proven, experienced operator who can immediately bolster Bolton's engine room. He is Steven Schumacher's eleventh signing of the summer, following the arrivals of David Watson, Ben Davies, Akin Famewo, Luca Stephenson, Kyliane Dong, Gaizka Larrazabal, Ryan Hardie, Lewis Brunt, Samuel Iling-Junior, and Jayden Nelson. The current squad list, including the new additions, is available on the official squad page.
Ito has also earned three senior caps for Japan. He marked his first start for the Samurai Blue with a goal in a 4-2 friendly win over Turkey in September 2023. Speaking about his move to England, Ito said, "Playing in the English Championship is going to be a big challenge for me and I'm really happy to be able to play for a club with this much history." He added, "I had a really passionate approach from the club and it made me want to play here."
What does this signing mean for Bolton?
This acquisition signals Bolton's ambition to add international quality and proven winning mentality to their ranks. Ito brings a trophy-laden pedigree from Japan and recent European football experience. His arrival provides Schumacher with another strong option in central midfield as the team prepares for a challenging away trip to Sheffield United. With Rúben Rodrigues unavailable, competition for places in the middle of the park remains intense. Fans can track the team's progress and league position on the standings page throughout the season.
