Bolton Wanderers have made significant changes to their squad following their successful promotion to the Championship. Defender George Johnston, who has been with the club for five years, has been released after captaining the team to victory in the League One play-off final against Stockport at Wembley. The 27-year-old made a total of 188 appearances for Bolton Wanderers, showcasing his commitment and skill during his tenure. Alongside Johnston, right-back Jordi Osei-Tutu will also depart the club after making 80 appearances since joining from Bochum in August 2024. Midfielder Kyle Dempsey, who was an unused substitute in the final, and Carlos Mendes Gomes, who spent much of the last season on loan at Exeter City, are also among the players released. Manager Steven Schumacher is now focused on strengthening the squad as they transition to life in the second tier of English football. With several loan players returning to their parent clubs, including Johnny Kenny and Rob Apter, Schumacher has a busy summer ahead to ensure Bolton Wanderers are competitive in the Championship. Additionally, Szabi Schon has completed a permanent move to Hungarian champions ETO FC Gyor after a successful loan spell, further reshaping the squad for the upcoming season.
