Bolton Wanderers CEO David Ray has called for a sustainable funding solution for the English Football League as talks over a potential £1bn deal with the Premier League continue. The club is handling its Championship campaign while advocating for a financial model that addresses rising losses across the EFL.

Ray stated the club is hopeful a new agreement can be reached but is not counting on a quick resolution. "We are not just talking about the Championship, it's EFL wide," he said. The EFL is seeking around £1 billion over five years to redistribute funds more fairly and tackle what its chief executive Trevor Birch has called a 'systemic insolvency risk'.

Financial pressures across the pyramid

Average losses in the Championship reached £21.6m last season, while in League One they rose from £2.3m to £7.3m over the past five years. A 10-year offer averaging £180m per season has been tabled in discussions. Ray noted losses have grown significantly over the last three or four years, affecting clubs in League One and Two particularly hard. Financial rules in League One have also been tightened, lowering the permitted wage spend from 60 to 50 per cent of turnover.

Planning under current conditions

With Bolton sitting 15th in the Championship on 10 points from eight games, the club is focused on its immediate challenges. Their recent form shows two wins from the last five, including a 4-3 victory at Norwich. The outcome of the funding negotiations, which require agreement from 16 of the 24 Championship clubs, could shape the competitive landscape for seasons to come. The impending publication of the State of the Game Report next month adds further pressure for a resolution. Bolton's immediate focus is on the pitch, where they have scored 10 goals and conceded 15, averaging 75 goal minutes per game. Their next fixture is a home match against Sheffield United.

Bolton continues to plan on the basis that current conditions will remain until a new deal is formally voted on. The full Championship standings show the tight margins at play in the division this season.
